Highlights from 2013-2014


50 Years of the Senior School — Sewickley Academy celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Senior School during Reunion Weekend.

Zumbathon — The annual event raised $1,788 in support of the Kurt Cerny Memorial Fund, which provides assistance to Sewickley Academy students who are recognized as aspiring performing artists, and who would benefit from educational opportunities to realize his or her full potential.

Boys’ Golf WPIAL Champions! — The Varsity Boys’ Golf Team captured the WPIAL Championship with a score of 398!

Class of 2014 Volunteers — The Class served a total of 9,053 hours of community service during their time at the Academy.

Summerbridge Traveled to Washington, D.C. — Students met Michelle Obama as part of National Summer Learning Day, which focused on the importance of young people pursuing and completing some form of higher education.

Sewickley Academy Welcomed Kim Phuc — A woman who, as a child, was photographed running down a road after her village was hit by an American napalm bomb in 1972. Kim travels the world speaking on the need for reconciliation, mutual understanding, dialogue, and negotiation in place of conflict. Kim shared her message of forgiveness with Middle and Senior School students. This event was supported in part by the Albert and Bertha Sector Speaker Series Fund.

Home and School Association Funds iPads for Faculty — Thanks to a generous grant from Home and School Association, every faculty member was issued an iPad Air, allowing them to explore ways that mobile technology can enhance teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond.

MS Students Present Research at National History Day Celebration — 20 Middle School students presented their research projects at the National History Day celebration at The Heinz History Center. Their hard work began in September when they picked topics, formed thesis statements, and began researching their chosen topics in this year’s theme. The theme was “Rights and Responsibilities.” Our students took first and second place in the group exhibits, second place in the group website, and second place in individual performance.

Clothesline Sale — Sewickley Academy’s Home & School Association has done it again! The 60th Annual Clothesline Sale had another banner year with $111,269 raised for the school!

SA Helps Set World Record in Sport Stacking! — With help from 404 stackers at Sewickley Academy, a new world record was set on November 14, as part of the 2013 STACK UP! According to the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA), this year’s event exceeded all expectations with 555,932 stackers taking part on Guinness World Records Day.

Boys Tennis WPIAL Champions! — The Varsity Boys’ Tennis Team captured its 11th consecutive WPIAL Championship.

Lower and Middle School Families Collect Toys and Clothes for Families in Need — Lower and Middle School students collected two vans full of toys, winter hats, gloves, and scarves for Pittsburgh’s East End Cooperative Ministries. These items were donated during the Lower School toy drive and the Middle School winter clothing drive. All donations were given to local families in need.

Auction Raises $388,000 for SA! — More than 200 guests attended the “Do You Dream in Color?” Auction on April 12 and raised more than $388,000 for the Academy!

Ephemera The 2013-14 Senior School arts magazine was recognized with high honors by the Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Association with a rating of “Superior” and by the National Council of Teachers of English with a “First Place” in a contest sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association.

Two Students Selected for PMEA District Orchestra — Two Senior School students were selected for the highly competitive Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 1 Honors String Orchestra Festival that took place in January 2014.

State Championship Boys’ Soccer Team — After capturing section and WPIAL championships in their 21—3 season, the boys went on to win the PIAA Championship against previously unbeaten Mountain View.

$700 Raised for Local Police & Fire Departments — On October 26, Sewickley Academy hosted more than 120 guests at the Sixth Annual Pancake Breakfast that raised $700 to support our local police and fire departments.

Cum Laude Society Inducts Six New Members — On January 15, six members of Sewickley Academy’s senior class, who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship throughout their junior and senior years, were inducted into the Cum Laude Society.

The Cum Laude Society is a national organization established in 1906 to recognize and encourage true scholarship and academic achievement among students in secondary schools. Modeled on Phi Beta Kappa for colleges, the society now has 324 chapters in the nation with 297 of those in independent schools. Sewickley Academy is one of only 19 schools in Pennsylvania that are members of the society.
