Highlights from 2014-2015


Class of 2015 Volunteers – The Class of 2015 served a total of 8,030 hours of community service during their time at the Academy.

SAs Fourth Annual Day of Service Had 100% Participation – On April 10, 2015, 100 percent of the SA community committed themselves to service projects on and off campus. Twelve buses transported 416 students to 29 different organizations to serve the greater Pittsburgh community.

Clothesline Sale – Sewickley Academy’s Home and School Association has done it again. The 61st Annual Clothesline Sale had another banner year with $111,838 raised for the school!

Auction Raised $368,000 for SA – More than 200 guests attended the “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Annual Auction on April 18, and raised more than $368,000 for the Academy!

$600 Raised for Local Police & Fire Departments – On October 25, Sewickley Academy hosted more than 100 guests at the Seventh Annual Pancake Breakfast that raised $600 to support our local police and fire departments.

Cum Laude Society Inducted Seven New Members – Seven members of Sewickley Academy’s senior class, who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship throughout their Senior School years, were inducted into the Cum Laude Society.

The Cum Laude Society is a national organization established in 1906 to recognize and encourage true scholarship and academic achievement among students in secondary schools. Modeled on Phi Beta Kappa for colleges, the society now has 324 chapters in the nation with 297 of those in independent schools. Sewickley Academy is one of only 19 schools in Pennsylvania that are members of the society.

Senior School Retreats – Grades 9-12 had a two day mission-aligned retreat in October. Grade 9 students worked on collaboration in design-thinking framework on-campus; Grade 10 students studied entrepreneurship at Blackberry Meadows and Bar Marco; Grade 11 students studied critical thinking at Fallingwater; and Grade 12 students experienced a college readiness bootcamp on campus. In this session, students learned how to use social media channels to advance their own personal stories in a public digital space, participated in a college admission case study facilitated by local university admission directors, and learned about financial aid.

Senior School Scares – Senior School student leadership fired up school life and school spirit by bringing back the School of Scares for the Halloween season.

Agree or Disagree – Senior School students participated in Sewickley Squares for Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, entertaining SA faculty, staff, and students alike.

CATCH – Middle School students participated in Children’s Actions That Create Hope (CATCH), a philanthropy education program, and donated more than $4,000 to three charities chosen by the students. Grade 6 supported World Vision; Grade 7 supported the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America; and Grade 8 supported Amy’s Ride/Walk for Pancreatic Cancer.

UFOs – As part of the Middle School’s Unidentified Friday Opportunity (UFO) program, students went to see their dance instructor Joe Jackson perform in My Fair Lady. Mr. Jackson is member of the Actors’ Equity Association of Pittsburgh. Students also experienced a Friday night Arts Crawl downtown and attended an improv comedy workshop at Arcade Comedy Theater.

Class of 2019 Student Won PJAS Competition – Grade 8 student Saarang Mulukutla researched water conservation and app development for his science fair project. Saarang presented his research at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences (PJAS) Competition and won first place in the state for environmental science.

MS Students Exposed to Different Cultures – The Middle School language department hosted the first World Language and Culture Extravaganza, complete with dance lessons in Chinese fan dancing, afro-jazz dance, and the flamenco. The history department hosted an international film festival throughout the year. All the films featured were original works from countries such as Brazil, India, China, and Nigeria.

Greetings from Uganda – The Ugandan Kids Choir sang, played, and danced their way into the hearts of Lower and Middle School students during an exceptional performance in the fall. In one final display of enthusiasm, the choir invited our students to join them onstage to learn a traditional dance.

Secret Garden Farm to Table – Lower School Spanish teacher Alison Howells had students cut rainbow swiss chard from the Secret Garden to make special quesadillas.

Lower School Families Collected Toys for Families in Need – Six Lower School student council members delivered two vans packed full of toys to the East End Cooperative Ministry in East Liberty. The items raised during the LS toy drive, which exceeded its goal of one gift per student, were given to local children in need.

LS Students Took on the School Block Challenge – Eleven Lower School students were excited to participate in the National Quilt Museum’s School Block Challenge for the first time last November. In this challenge, elementary students across the country are invited to submit a quilt block using a kit of three fabrics as part of their design.

LS Students Trick-or-Treat for Unicef – For the third year, Lower School students participated in Trick-or-Treat for Unicef and raised $1,759.94. 

40 Families Received Meals for Thanksgiving – The Sewickley Academy community generously participated in the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. More than 40 families received meals for the holiday. In addition, money donated purchased 30 turkeys and offered an opportunity for the Food Pantry to give gift certificates to community members to shop at local supermarkets.

Five Sports Teams Won WPIAL Title - Congratulations to the following varsity teams on winning the WPIAL title in 2014-2015: Boys Cross Country, Boys Golf, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis, and Boys Tennis!

Five SA Students Participated in PMEA Band Events – Congratulations to Navin Rana and Noah McAdams, who participated in PMEA Elementary District Band; William Sands, who participated in PMEA Junior High District Band; and Priya Rajawat and Charlie Balaan, who participated in PMEA Senior High District Band. Charlie was also selected to play in the PMEA Honors Band, Region Band, and All-State Band.

Three SA Students Participated in PMEA Honors Orchestra – Congratulations to Emma Balaan, Natalia Arbelaez Solano, and Garrett Stocker, who participated in PMEA Honors Orchestra.
